How to Select a Monologue for Your Acting Auditions

If you are serious about becoming an actor and really want to put your best foot forward when going out on acting auditions, then you should seriously consider devoting some time and attention to the monologue you will be using when not given a particular script to read for try-outs. Below are some tips we’ve put together to help you choose a monologue that is best for your auditions.

Don’t Choose Your Favorite Monologue for Your Acting Auditions

Have you ever watched American Idol only to see your favorite singer belt out a song that just didn’t go with their voice? The same singer when asked why they sang that particular song most often than not says, “Oh, I chose it because it’s my favorite song.” Your favorite song may have some meaning for you, but unless you can express that song in such a way that makes it meaningful for others, don’t sing it. This is the same with monologues and your acting auditions. Don’t choose a monologue for yourself just because it’s your favorite. Pick it because you bring something extra to it when you recite it.

Don’t Choose a Monologue for Your Acting Auditions on Your Own

If you are going to invest your time, effort and money in classes and acting auditions, then take some time to really investigate which monologues best suit you. Sit down with an acting coach and really explore what works for you and what you do best when reciting monologues. This is equivalent to an interview for your most favorite job. Would you just walk in with any thing or would you carefully prepare for the job interview days or weeks before? I would think the latter. Taking the care to prepare yourself for this big step is the best investment you can make at this time – and it won’t necessarily cost you anything, just some extra time and effort.

Don’t Follow the Crowd at Acting Auditions

When you show up for acting auditions it is very easy to get caught up in the crowd mentality. People tend to mimic each other after awhile. Be sure to stay focused on what you are there for, don’t get distracted by people trying to chit chat with you about your ambitions, and don’t be thrown off by the Mr. or Mrs. Drama King or Queen who may be there with you. There is always someone there who wants more attention that he or she may deserve. Keep your attention where it needs to be – on your audition – and odds are, you will do well, and maybe even better than you expected. The important thing is making sure you devote your time and effort to your craft wisely. Don’t get distracted. Don’t get discouraged, and most importantly, prepare yourself as best you can. The best equipped you are, the more likely you are to outshine your competition and in this line of work, that’s half the battle.
