Children of a Lesser God Casting – 1463537
11-25-14 – Albany, NY>Buffalo, NY – Out of Pocket Productions is excited to announce auditions for its upcoming production of Mark Medoff’s classic drama “Children of a Lesser God,” to be directed by Dr. Cece McFarland, who directed our production of “Well” this past season.

Callbacks will be held at the same time/location on December 4th, if necessary.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a one-minute monologue; monologue can be read, memorized, and/or signed. Auditions will also consist of reading from the script. Please make every effort to have read the script beforehand.

The production itself will staged at the MuCCC from January 30-February 7, 2015.

SYNOPSIS:

After three years in the Peace Corps, James, a young speech therapist, joins the faculty of a school for the deaf, where he is to teach lip-reading. He meets Sarah, a school dropout, totally deaf from birth, and estranged both from the world of hearing and from those who would compromise to enter that world. The chasm between the worlds of sound and silence seems almost too great to cross…but love and compassion hold the hope of reconciliation, and a deeper, fuller understanding of differences that, in the final essence, can unite as well as divide.

Rochester Auditions Taming Of The Shrew – 1463171
11-24-14 – Buffalo, NY>Albany, NY – Preparation: Please prepare any monologue from any play or literary work written by William Shakespeare of your choice.

SYNOPSIS:
Baptista is looking to marry off her daughters, the younger, beautiful, if somewhat ditzy, Bianca, and the fierce, strong-willed Kate. When a couple of suitors (Gremio and Hortensio) appear to ask Bianca’s hand in marriage, Baptista must inform them that she cannot marry off the younger before the older. The two then concoct a devilish plan to have Katherine tamed and married to a friend of theirs, Petruchio. However the plot thickens when Lucentio, a handsome young man, arrives in town and instantly falls in love with Bianca. Determined to have her, and unbeknownst to anyone else, he tricks Bianca into thinking he is a tutor, and begins to woo her. Hilarity ensues with the mistaken identities and the love the characters have for each other.

2: Henry V by Shakespeare

3: All’s Well that Ends Well by Shakespeare

Audition Tips:

Be Patient
When you arrive, simply sign in, and complete an audition sheet, and have a seat. The casting director(s) will call for you.

Perfect Your Monologue
If you are asked to bring a monologue, make certain that you have rehearsed it completely. Do not just know the lines, know the character you are becoming. Let the directors see a striking difference between the person that just said hello to them, and the character that is now coming to life on the stage. At the same time, be flexible with the audition material. They might have you read the lines over, asking you to take on a different personality. Sure, you may do great when you perform the monologue with tears in your eyes, but be prepared if they ask you to do the same lines in a calm, icy voice or a whimsical British dialect. If given the chance, show them that you can interpret the role in many different ways.

Get to Know the Play
Many auditions involve reading “sides.” Sides are small, hand-picked portions of a script. Sometimes they are a brief monologue. Sometimes they are short scenes involving two or more characters. Most of the time, you won’t know exactly what scene you’ll be reading. In that case, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the play in general. If you are auditioning for a popular play feel free to buy a copy of the script online or at your local book store. Better yet, visit your local library. Watching a film version of the play might help as well. However, don’t simply mimic the movie actor’s performance. Casting directors want to see what you can create, not what you can imitate.

Practice Cold Reading
If the play is rather obscure or brand new, it may be difficult to purchase a copy. In that case, you’ll want to polish up your cold reading skills. Cold reading is the act of performing lines as you read them for the very first time. It can be a nerve wracking experience, but with practice most actors can become quite adept at it. The best way to become a fluent cold reader is to read aloud as often as you can. When you cold read during your audition, do not worry if you stumble over a word or two. The important thing to remember is to stay in character. Create chemistry between you and your fellow actor. Make the casting director, and anyone else watching, believe that you are thinking and feeling the words on the page.

Don’t Apologize
After an audition, an actor becomes his own worst critic. Often times, hopeful thespians are tempted to explain themselves to the directors. They provide excuses or even apologies in hopes of gaining sympathy. Avoid this as much as you can. Thank the casting director and leave the stage knowing that if you are right for the part, they will contact you. If not, know that you did your best. And remember: there are many other wonderful roles out there just waiting to be filled.
Please check back for future upcoming auditions.

Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Rupunzel are just a few of your favorite storybook characters that collide in one epic adventure. Wishes will be granted, but when there are witches and giants about, “happily ever after” is not always the end of the story. Delightfully humorous and beautifully poignant, this Sondheim masterpiece is not a kids’ story, but an entertaining look at the consequences of “I wish.”

Please come with a prepared song from a Sondheim musical (other than “Into the Woods”) or in a Sondheim style (ie: no Rogers and Hammerstein). A second song is encouraged. Accompanist provided. No dance audition. Auditioners will be asked to reserve a specific time slot in advance. — Project Type: Live Event

10-31-14 – Albany, NY>Buffalo, NY – In this hilarious comedy by the author of Lend Me A Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo, two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing “Scenes from Shakespeare” on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in York, PA is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble is, when they get to York, they find out that the relatives aren’t nephews, but nieces! Romantic entanglements abound, especially when Leo falls head-over-petticoat in love with the old lady’s vivacious niece, Meg, who’s engaged to the local minister. Meg knows that there’s a wide world out there, but it’s not until she meets “Maxine and Stephanie” that she finally gets a taste of it. — Project Type: Live Event

About the Story:
George Bailey has spent his entire life giving of himself to the people of Bedford Falls. He has always longed to travel but never had the opportunity in order to prevent rich skinflint Mr. Potter from taking over the entire town. All that prevents him from doing so is George’s modest building and loan company, which was founded by his generous father. But on Christmas Eve, George’s Uncle Billy loses the business’s $8,000 while intending to deposit it in the bank. Potter finds the misplaced money and hides it from Billy. When the bank examiner discovers the shortage later that night, George realizes that he will be held responsible and sent to jail and the company will collapse, finally allowing Potter to take over the town. Thinking of his wife, their young children, and others he loves will be better off with him dead, he contemplates suicide. But the prayers of his loved ones result in a gentle angel named Clarence coming to earth to help George, with the promise of earning his wings. He shows George what things would have been like if he had never been born. In a nightmarish vision in which the Potter-controlled town is sunk in sex and sin, those George loves are either dead, ruined, or miserable. He realizes that he has touched many people in a positive way and that his life has truly been a wonderful one.

T As the trial moves ahead, the town’s emotions run high, mobs gather and relationships are strained. Over the course of the trial, it becomes clear that Tom could not have raped Mayella.
